Common questions

Answers to the questions people ask most before reaching out. Nothing here replaces a conversation — a free 15-minute consultation is the best way to talk through your specific situation.

01.

What does Dr. Tam Nguyen-Louie specialize in?

Dr. Nguyen-Louie is a licensed clinical psychologist treating depression, anxiety, trauma and PTSD, and OCD, with a particular focus on Asian-Americans, immigrants, and adult children and grandchildren of immigrants.

02.

How does Dr. Nguyen-Louie's specialty focus on Asian-Americans, immigrants, and adult children of immigrants?

Dr. Nguyen-Louie is an Asian-American psychologist with both lived and professional experience supporting Asian-Americans, immigrants, and adult children and grandchildren of immigrants — including acculturation, family expectations, intergenerational conflict, and bicultural identity. Everyone is welcome regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, religious affiliation, or background; this is simply an area of particular focus and expertise.

03.

What therapy approaches are used?

Dr. Nguyen-Louie takes a lot of care to conduct a thorough psychosocial assessment to understand what's going on first. Then the type of therapy that best fits your needs is discussed in session. Some examples include: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). Other modalities will be considered as appropriate. There is no one size fits all, and it ultimately depends on providing the most conscientious evidence-based care to meet you where you're at.

04.

What's the difference between a clinical psychologist, an LCSW, and an LCPC — and how do I know which is the right fit?

All three are licensed mental health professionals who can provide therapy, but they're trained and credentialed differently. A clinical psychologist (Ph.D. or Psy.D., like Dr. Nguyen-Louie) completes a doctoral program with substantial training in assessment, diagnosis, and research alongside clinical practice. An LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) and an LCPC (Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor) hold master's-level degrees in social work or counseling, respectively, plus supervised clinical hours before licensure. In practice, fit tends to come down less to the license type and more to the clinician's specific training, approach, and experience with your particular concern — which is exactly what a free 15-minute consultation is for.

05.

Is therapy available outside Maryland?

Yes — virtual sessions are available to residents of more than 40 states and jurisdictions participating in the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT), including Maryland, D.C., and Virginia. See the full participating-state list and PSYPACT details on the teletherapy page.

06.

Is in-person therapy available?

Limited in-person sessions are available in Columbia, MD (Howard County). Many clients combine in-person and virtual sessions.

07.

What insurance is accepted?

Blue Cross Blue Shield (including Anthem and CareFirst) and Aetna. Superbills are available for clients with other insurance who want to seek out-of-network reimbursement.

08.

How do I get started?

Contact the practice for a free 15-minute phone consultation to talk through what you're looking for and whether it's a good fit, before scheduling a first session.

09.

What isn't offered?

This practice does not offer couples or family therapy, child therapy, medication management, or crisis/inpatient care. If you are experiencing a psychiatric or medical emergency, contact 911 or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline immediately.

10.

How long does therapy take?

Therapy is a very unique, person-dependent process. In our work together, I take as much time as you need, while also helping you reach your goals as soon as possible. You can expect to see some real, tangible changes within 6-8 months. Most people who work with Dr. Nguyen-Louie “graduate” from therapy within 1-1.5 years meeting once a week, after they've met all their therapy goals.
