Betrayal trauma & affair recovery counseling for couplesthe Gottman Method

I offer betrayal trauma and affair recovery counseling for couples by video in Maryland, D.C., Virginia and California.

Has an affair, or another breach of trust, shaken the foundation of your relationship? Are you and your partner struggling to make sense of what happened, rebuild trust, and decide how — or whether — to move forward together?

My approach to affair recovery

My approach to affair recovery draws on the Gottman Method, a structured, research-informed framework for working through betrayal — understanding what happened, processing the trauma it caused, and rebuilding trust (or, where that's not possible, finding a way to move forward with less harm). I take a holistic approach that makes room for both partners' experience of what happened.

I take great care to assess whether this is the right fit for your situation. My goal is to help you and your partner get clarity, process the betrayal, and decide together what comes next.

Expertise & training

I am a licensed clinical psychologist trained in the Gottman Method for betrayal trauma and affair recovery. The Affair Recovery protocol follows a three-step process: Atone, Attune, and Attach, to help couples whose relationship has been impacted by infidelity to heal, move on, and reconnect again. My expertise in working with PTSD and trauma generally extends to identifying and treating the psychological pain of betrayal.

While infidelity does not meet present diagnostic criteria for PTSD, its emotional, cognitive, and behavioral impacts on both partners are immense. The Gottman Method provides a research-based, structured approach to understanding how your relationship got here and how to move past it towards an even stronger future.

Common questions

Do you offer general couples or marriage counseling?

My focus is on treating trauma, whether it is in individual or couples therapy. For this reason, I only work with couples to address betrayal trauma and affair recovery. I would not be a good fit for your needs if you are looking for general relationship concerns outside this specific area.

Can we do this by video if we don't live in Maryland?

Yes — sessions are available by video to couples in Maryland, D.C., Virginia, California, and the other PSYPACT states. See the full list of participating states.

Do you take insurance for couples counseling?

Most insurance policies do not cover couples or marital counseling — relationship problems aren't considered a mental health disorder, so insurance will often not pay for it. Couples counseling is likely an out-of-pocket expense; contact me to discuss fees.

Where I see clients

I see couples by video for adults in Maryland, D.C., Virginia and California, plus the other PSYPACT states. I am a licensed clinical psychologist trained in the Gottman Method, and this is the one area of couples work I offer.
